MASON

I heard the hum of the dirt bike in the distance and my heart had never felt this relieved before. I’d been staring at my watch all night, almost begging it to strike midnight so I could take John and handle things myself, but that kind of luck wasn’t on my side. It was barely after ten and Cora was already back.

I didn’t realistically expect her to be riding back with Joey, Axel, or Brent. But admittedly, I hoped for it. I wanted to believe that this entire thing was just a misunderstanding. Maybe they were safe and sound at the F9 Underground, and this had all been a mistake.

But instead, it was only Cora and Margaret.

They pulled the vehicle up to the far shed, cutting the engine and climbing off. I wondered what kind of a mood she’d be in. I had to play it cool.

“How’d it go over there?” I asked nonchalantly, making my way over to them.

“One of the best nights I’ve had in a long time,” Margaret said while blushing. “I want to go back.”

“We’ll see,” Cora replied with a smirk. “It seems our friend Margaret here has found herself a love interest.”

Margaret giggled. “He’s just…his arms…”

“Yeah, you can spare me the play-by-play,” I shot back, trying to keep the conversation light. “I know Christine is downstairs, though. I’m not sure if she’s still awake, but you can go give her all the mushy details.”

“Trust me, I will,” Margaret said whimsically. “Cora, will you please think about tomorrow night? Please? We can both go back and…”

Cora quickly shook her head, signaling to Margaret to stop talking.

She excused herself and made her way over to the bunker hatch, leaving Cora and me alone.

“So? Any broad arms you want to gush about?”

“Stop,” she said, playfully punching my chest. “It wasn’t like that.”

I reached out and grabbed her hand. “What is this? What happened to your wrists? They’re all red. Both of them. What happened?”

She instinctively pulled them away from me.

“It was nothing.” She pulled the sleeves down on her sweatshirt. “It was just…it was nothing.”

“Okay.” I hesitated. “You want to talk about what happened over there?”

“It was fine.”

“That’s…that’s it? It was fine?” I didn’t mean to raise my voice, but her quick explanations weren’t very comforting. “What happened over there, Cora? Where are the rest of our security men? Give me something.”

“I’m still working on it,” she said softly, reaching out to grab my hand. She ran her fingers along the back of mine. “Just trust me on this one, okay?”

“Trust you? What exactly am I trusting you to do?”

“I just…” She hesitated. “I need more time. I’m sure they know something. In fact, they know a hell of a lot more about those tunnels than we do. At least in the overall sense. Maybe not the ones under your farm specifically, but they know about the others. They know where our men are. I’m going to figure it out. I promise you.”

“With bruised wrists? What’s next? Are
